The Next Year

1943

So the nominees were:
  • Jean Arthur in The More The Merrier
  • Ingrid Bergman in For Whom The Bell Tolls
  • Joan Fontaine in The Constant Nymph
  • Greer Garson in Madame Curie
  • Jennifer Jones in The Song of Bernadette
A weak year apparently but we'll see. :)

What do you think? What's your ranking? What's your prediction for my ranking?

  1. Arthur and Jones seem to split the votes this year. My pick is Bergman, though – an unaffected and radiant performance. She's incredible.

  2. I would have sworn that Ingrid is your pick. :) Her perf is not popular but I'm gonna tell you a secret... When I last saw her, I loved her performance. :) We'll see how she does now.

  3. I hope you'll pick Jennifer but I have no idea...just a wild guess:

    1. Ingrid
    2. Jennifer
    3. Jean
    4. Joan
    5. Greer

  4. Bergman is disgusting.

It's probably the weakest year I've ever reviewed. Jones is almost in another world compared to everyone else. Her last scene alone is worth an Oscar.

  5. 1. Jones
    2. Fontaine
    3. Bergman
    4. Arthur
    5. Garson

  6. Sage: Well, you know I love Ingrid so it's a bit painful for me to read such things. Hope you understand. :)

  7. I know you love Ingrid Bergman, I do too, but even I didn't like her performance in this film, I think she honestly did nothing (the Academy really should have nominated her for Casablanca instead!), so I hope Jones wins this.

  8. Anon: We'll se what I think of Ingrid. But it's true, she should have been nominated for Casablanca.

  9. I don't consider this a "weak" year for actresses. It isn't the strongest, but each of the these five performances are a pleasure to watch and rewatch and definitely are a major plus in their films.
I remember being just blown away by Jennifer's performance. As a very proud product of Catholic schools, I find this performance inspirational every time I see it.
I read in King's autobiography that when he was auditioning actresses for the part of Bernadette, he was suppose to have said Jones was the only one who saw a vision.
One of my favorite performances--I hope it will be yours too,
Great blog-I go into it everyday and just love to print out your "conclusions."
