The Next Year

1995

So the nominees were:

  • Susan Sarandon in Dead Man Walking
  • Elisabeth Shue in Leaving Las Vegas
  • Sharon Stone in Casino
  • Meryl Streep in The Bridges of Madison County
  • Emma Thompson in Sense and Sensibiliy
Thank God this year has become very timely, thanks to the well-deserved and very much anticipated third win of Meryl. :) Can you think of celebrating in a better way? She might even become my first four-time winner and the only one to gain three wins in a row (I will be completely impartial, don't worry)!

What do you think? Who's your pick? What's your prediction for my ranking? :)

  2. For me its between Emma, Sharon and Meryl. Shue and Sarandon are also wonderful. I think i would vote for Stone here, she was amazing in Casino. Emma is close second.

And no, Meryl is so not deserving this year, especially over Viola, my heart just broke when she won. And please, dont start talk about her 4th when Close, Weaver, Pfeifer all have zero. Three Oscars are way too much!

  3. Hmm Streep could continue to win, I only see Sarandon as a threat. Although I suppose Shue could surprise perhaps.

    Predictions
    1. Streep
    2. Saradon
    3. Shue
    4. Thompson
    5. Stone

  5. I don't like this year at all! Shue and Streep were wonderful, Stone and Sarandon were okay, but Thompson was BORING. I love english - period dramas, but the only thing I value is Sense and Sensibility is the heartbreaking performance of Kate Winslet and the lovely Alan Rickman.

About the Oscars, well I think it's all about the performances, If you really give the best performance it doesn't matter that you already had two oscars, it's not a contest where everyone had to be awarded and an oscar doesn't have to award a body of work but a solo performance, whatever the movie, only the performance. Meryl always gave tremendous performances, so if one day she deserved to be honoured, it doesn't matter that she already had 3. After all, it's not her fault, and she doesn't have to be punished because others performers (Pfeiffer, Weaver, and Great Glenn) were never be awarded.

PS: Sorry my comments are always way too long, English is not my first language do I try to be precise when I said something.

  7. I did not notice that Meryl could be your third in a row winner, that's funny!

Anyway, I'm hoping/thinking Sarandon will pull this off!

  15. I don't see a lot of love for Emma Thompson this year. I think she was very good in Sense and Sensibility; I personally rank her above Meryl Streep and Susan Sarandon.

  17. Shue is great, Sarandon has great chemistry with her co-star. Streep really surpsised me with a subtle and haunting performance. Thompson was good but she has given similar performances before, and she has also done them better. I used to be a fan of Stone but on re-watch I find her quite annoying. I don't know how they overlooked Kathy Bates in 'Dolores Claiborne' for the Oscar.

  21. I didn't realise that "To die for" was released in 1995, Kidman should have been nominated. It's a standout performance!
