The Next Year

1988

So the nominees were:
  • Glenn Close in Dangerous Liaisons
  • Jodie Foster in The Accused
  • Melanie Griffith in Working Girl
  • Meryl Streep in A Cry in the Dark
  • Sigourney Weaver in Gorillas in the Mist
Continuing a Streepathon celebrating Meryl's third, a year with three previous winners of mine and two ladies I haven't yet reviewed. Great Glenn seems to be the odds-on favorite to win here but let's see if I'll jump on the Meryl bandwagon like many of my fellow bloggers or pick someone else. :)

What do you think? Who's your pick? What's your prediction for my ranking? :)

I love all of theses ladies but Susan Sarandon deserves place here instead of Griffith(who i also love here). Great Glenn will win, but i would've voted for one of courtroom girls.

BTW, its still a mystery for me how Foster won over two Oscarless actresses in BP nominees. (Foster became second actress ever to win lead actress Oscar for a movie that have only one nomination, only Joanne Woodward before her, and Bates, Lange and Theron after have done that)

At the time, I would have placed my bets on Great Glenn. Regardless of her performance, 1988 was her time to shine, I think. After so many losses... And she's still Oscarless.

I haven't seen Foster (because of the film) and I haven't seen Meryl because I am saving this performance for as long as I can. :) don't wanna see all of her Oscar stuff right now.

of the remaining 3, Glenn an obvious choice.

I suspect she WAS in fact the runner-up to Foster's win.

you'll go with Glenn or Meryl.

It was weaver i fewlt sorry losing both times.this was the time to honor both weaver and close and then let jodie win in 91,they messed up big time, agree about sarandon's snub>

mrripley: It was an opportunity to reward two actresses who were overdue. Siggy could have (should have) won for Supporting and Great Glenn could have won for Leading. And yes, Jodie won afterwards and that makes me even more bitter about Great Glenn's loss.

Haven't seen anybody but SigSig and Melanie, mostly because I hear how great those other three are lol. I just hope you like Siggy, because Glenn will take it all.

And this definitely should have been the year of Glenn/Siggy winning their Oscars at least on paper. Jodie and Geena would have their times to shine in 1991.

Hmm this is Close's to lose although this is considered one of Streep's best performances so she could upset here.

1. Close
2. Streep
3. Foster
4. Weaver
5. Griffith

Agree with Louis....

I would have bet on Jodie, I think she was the newcomer that broke out with a powerful performance which people were passionate about.

I think Close should have won, but there was lack of passion for her that caused her to lose. Also, Melanie had a shot, but her chances were too slim.

Well, well, the same year I do :)
I truly think you'll go for Glenn because she's clearly OUTSTANDING, and you love her so much, and it's your last chance to honor her. Albert nobbs and Fatal Attraction are already reviewed.

I' m glad you do this year, and I'm dying to read your reviews.

wait and see.

I'm gonna go against the wave and I'll guess it's Meryl's. :P

Predictions:
1. Meryl (haven't seen yet)
2. Glenn (thrillingly relaxed)
3. Jodie (emotionally naked)
4. Sigourney (haven't seen yet)
5. Melanie (carries soul in her movie)

Hope everyone will do good, especially Weaver. Hope you like her this time. =)

Anon: I just love that link, mostly because of the #8 performance. ;) I have some issues with the others, though. LOL :D

But you loved performances of Streep, Watson, Keaton, Weaver,... But they screwed up with some male preformances though.

Yeah, I mean Sly... Come on... :D

I predict that Meryl might just win you over in the end. ;D

1. Close
2. Streep
3. Foster
4. Weaver
5. Griffith

I think it's unfortunate that Griffith, and perhaps Weaver, though I haven't seen her to know for sure, was nominated. I'd have preferred at least having Susan Sarandon for Bull Durham as well as maybe even Jamie Lee Curtis for A Fish Called Wanda, two comedic performances much better in my opinion than Griffith's

Can't wait! :)

If I am not wrong, Glen Close was not even nominated by Golden Globe and many other major awards for her performance in Dangerous Liason.
