The Next Year

2012

So the nominees are:
  • Jessica Chastain in Zero Dark Thirty
  • Jennifer Lawrence in Silver Linings Playbook
  • Emmanuelle Riva in Amour
  • Quvenzhané Wallis in Beasts of the Southern Wild
  • Naomi Watts in The Impossible
Since I have very little time left, I have to interrupt 1999 (which will be finished immediately after 2012, don't worry) so that I can finish 2012 before the ceremony (I'm planning to write a more thorough should win/will win than usual). I can say one thing in advance: what a year! And I tell you, according to my own estimations, it will be a real Sophie's Choice between not two, but three (!) performances (very much like 1996). And I love it that none of these performances are usual Best Actress stuff.

What do you think? Who's your pick? Who do you think will win the Oscar? And more importantly :P, what's your prediction for my ranking? :)

I'll be seeing Riva today, so expect a review soon :). My pick is Lawrence right now.

As usual, you are much more enthusiastic about this year's nominees than I am. I've seen all but Riva and don't really have a strong favorite. The weird thing about this year is how often my opinions have changed about these ladies, especially in regards to JLaw and JChas.

JLaw will win the Oscar, I don't think enough people will even see Amour for Riva to take it.

Prediction:
1. Jennifer Lawrence
2. Emmanuelle Riva
3. Jessica Chastain
4. Quvenzhane Wallis
5. Naomi Watts

Since you have shown support for Amour, Silver Linings Playbook, and Zero Dark Thirty this make this rather difficult.

Prediction:
1. Riva
2. Chastain
3. Lawrence
4. Wallis
5. Watts

I think it might be close between the top three.

Derek: I think the same. Plus SLP has such a great campaign, JenLaw is everywhere, with every possible talk show host reassuring her that they're rooting for her etc.

I'm predicting, I'm predicting =))))

1. Riva
2. Lawrence
3. Chastain
4. Wallis
5. Watts

will see Riva tomorrow, hopefully. what a line-up!

I'm predicting a Lawrence win, with Chastain and Riva as clear potential spoilers, and Watts as a very possible longshot win.

Hi I have been reading your blog for a while and this is my first time commenting
I have only watched lawrence and chastaidn and while my preference is more towards Lawrence's performance, I have to commend Chastain for making such a one dimensional character compelling to watch. But i personally feel that while Lawrence truly deserves her nom, a win might be a little bit much
Personally, I find the best supporting actress race more exciting this year. It seems like Anne Hathaway's the best bet but the whole performance feels very calculated to me (and this is coming from a hathaway fan). I didn't see a lonely and crushed woman when she sang I dreamed a dream...the whole cover screamed "I can scream and cry! Feel sorry for me and give me the oscar!". I guess not many people are going to agree with me on this though...plus, Anne has more or less successfully sold her performance as the best of the year
My personal favourite so far would be Amy Adams or Sally Field. And if you ask me, The Master really got snubbed for direction, screenplay, score and cinematography but once again, I don't think many would agree with me

Anyway, I just want to say that I love reading your reviews and that while I may not agree with all of your choices, your comments are very insightful and balanced. Looking forward to what you have to say this year!

Okay so you have shown so much love for Riva and I can't help but feel that you'll rank her first. I don't think she'll win the Oscar though, just my opinion. Anyway my ranking is

5. Watts
4. Wallis
3. Chastain
2. Riva
1. Lawrence

If I'm being completely honest, I'm not sure Naomi Watts deserved a nom. I mean is she really leading the movie? No nom for Ewan McGregor? And adding on to what nic said, I personally loved Anne Hathaway as Fantine and while yes I think her performance was very calculated, it paid off I think. I was really rooting for Amy Adams though since she's one of my favorites and she's already been nominated three times before but I'm content with Anne winning her Oscar.

I wouldn't be too upset with Anne winning too I guess...she is a talented actress and if I am being completely honest, I actually preferred her performance in Rachel getting married over Kate Winslet in The Reader that year
I have heard some really good stuff about Naomi Watts but I'm not sure whether I want to watch this movie. I know that the movie is about hope and all but god, I really really don't like watching disaster flicks. And this is even though I love Naomi Watts as an actress (Eastern promises!!). Anyway, she still has her chance with that Diana biopic which I'm kinda meh about...I used to find biopics interesting but nowadays I find them kinda exploitative in a sense that many actors are only using them as oscar baits as opposed to really wanting to tell a story about real life characters. I mean we are going to have movies about grace kelly, diana, janis joplin, and even possibly Clinton??? (with Meryl Streep rumoured to play the part AGAIN!?!?)
Regarding Anne, i think she would undoubtedly win this time by the looks of things. ANNND I hope Amy will sweep the awards in the future since she has a couple of pretty promising projects in the pipeline! For all you know she could secure her first leading actress nom and even win with that janis joplin project (although I don't think she really looks the part)

nic: Thanks for the kind words and your comments! :) I'll reveal my picks in all the categories right before the Oscars.

I'm also hoping for a very soon Oscar win for Amy Adams. She surely deserves it and that Joplin biopic might just do the trick. :) Unless it's in 2014 where I don't want anyone to threaten Great Glenn's chances.
