The Next Year

1993

So the nominees were:

  • Angela Bassett in What's Love Got to Do with It
  • Stockard Channing in Six Degrees of Separation
  • Holly Hunter in The Piano
  • Emma Thompson in Remains of the Day
  • Debra Winger in Shadowlands
One of the most interesting years of the 1990s, for sure. Will I fall under the pre-voodoo queen spell of Angela Bassett? Will my love for Emma Thompson carry her to the big win? Am I going to join the Holly Hunter fans? Or will I pick one of the other two exceptional ladies?

What do you think? (I'll get back to 1999, but I don't feel like it right now). :)

This is indeed a very interesting year, and one where I've seen 4 of the 5 (sorry Debra!). Unfortunately, interesting does not actually mean good, and I'm not high on any of these except for Holly Hunter. Emma & Stockard are forgettable and Angela is basically in a cheap soap opera imo. My always wrong predictions:

1. Holly Hunter
2. Angela Bassett
3. Emma Thompson
4. Stockard Channing
5. Debra Winger

Hunter wins this easily. Would love to see Thompson second but the chances are slim!

Hunter takes it easy. While Thompson is my favorite living actress, and she is pretty strong, and I love the film (the book is actually my favorite book ever), but she simply isn't win-worthy as she lacks a transformative arc and doesn't have an Oscar scene. It depends upon your thoughts on Bassett to decide whether Emma's 2nd or 3rd.

1. Holly Hunter
2. Angela Bassett
3. Emma Thompson
4. Stockard Channing
5. Debra Winger
